Cuffy (Koffi, Kofi or Coffi) The Berbice Slave Revolution
The Berbice slave revolt of 1763 was a revolution by enslaved Africans turned revolutionaries. Much more than a revolt, Cuffy and his comrades were revolutionary in daring to establish a separate, independent, and free state for blacks. Before, the narrative has always claimed the revolution just a rebellion or revolt. But now, people of African descent are telling our own stories and making the note that this 1763 slave rebellion in the Dutch colony of Berbice (now a county in Guyana) had the political mechanisms of a revolution, even if European historians downplay its importance.
An uprising by enslaved Africans erupted on February the 23rd, 1763, on the Magdelenenburgh Plantation, which was on the banks of the Canje R iver , a tributary of the Berbice River.
